The Best Road Trips from Galway – Part 3
Poster: Ciara Geraghty
Cong, Ashford Castle & Lough Nafooey
This is a great trip for “The Quiet Man” film fans as you can see a lot of the filming sites in the village of Cong and on the grounds of Ashford Castle.
Make your way out the Headford Road (N84), just past Headford on the way to Cong you can stop and see the ruins of Ross Erilly Friary, one of the best preserved medieval sites in the country.
In Cong and Ashford, you can visit Pat Cohan’s bar, the dying man’s house, the river fight scene, Reverend Playfairs House and more. Not to forget the beautiful grounds of Ashford Castle. The Groundskeepers do an amazing job looking after the gardens here. There’s also a school of falconry on site for the fearless…
After leaving Cong, travel towards Clonbur and then onto a tiny little place called Finny. There’s a great little pub here called “Larches” that’s worth a visit, it has one of my favourite views in Ireland overlooking the picturesque Lough Nafooey. There’s just something special about it. There was actually another film that shot a few scenes in this neck of the woods… Marley & Me starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson! If you’ve seen the movie you’ll remember the couple take a trip to Ireland and there’s a scene where there car gets block by a herd of sheep.
Once you leave the mirrored lake behind you can connect back to the N59 to Galway via Maam & Maam Cross and if you didn’t get a chance to do Road Trip # 2 of our Galway day trips then you can add on a few of the sights from that trip like the Quiet Man Cottage and Bridge on to this one on your way back to Galway, if you have time to spare!
